Why the name ‘Grazing Nomads’?

Well it’s simple really, we intend for the blog to be an informative mixture of food and travel articles; two of our favourite things. That means you can look forward to and expect lots of different – sometimes slightly bizarre – recipes from around the world, whilst getting a flavour for the culture and the people that we meet.

We intend to include practical information and advice based on our travel experiences and destinations, including travel costs, border crossing information and more. However we want this blog to be a shared experience, where we and others can equally share our trips, tips and tales.

So who’s ‘Grazing’?

Kirsty’s desire to travel started many years before this trip, with various journeys to India, Vietnam, Morocco and more. These were all life changing and inspirational experiences, but short-lived. Similarly, John caught the travelling bug from a previous 300 mile bike ride from South East England to Amsterdam. After each trip, it was with a heavy heart that we came back to our ‘normal’ lives to finish our degrees.

Upon the completion of our degrees, we had no desire for typical 9-5 office jobs, and with an overwhelming thirst for adventure, a desire to find more culinary delights, we began plotting our ‘great’ escape.

Since we both have a love of meeting people, trying new foods and a taste for adventure it seemed natural to take the leap and to start Grazingnomads to share our experience.

 

The route

The idea to travel together arose during the gloomy UK winter of 2015. Being a minimum realistic we knew we would never have the patience to wait several months or years to save up for expensive long-haul flights across the world. So we decided to start relatively close to home: Turkey.

With our minimal budget we decided to focus on the cheaper, arguably more interesting, Eastern side of Turkey and wwoof (volunteering in exchange for accomodation) in a turtle protection centre in Cirali. Eastern Turkey has always been a major attraction due to its Arab links, its strong Middle Eastern influence – and of course, the food.

From Cirali we travel East, using free or the cheapest means of transportation and accommodation (John’s convinced we should bring a tent – I’m sure many stories of disasters will follow!). Working our way up the country we hope to reach Georgia and subsequently Armenia. Although the original plan included Azerbaijan and a boat to Turkmenistan reading fellow bloggers and traveler’s advice on visa difficulties and expenses we decided to fly from Armenia straight to Kyrgyzstan and then Tajikistan. However, this route has yet to be set in stone and we welcome any advice or opinions on how to cross the Caspian Sea!

Our journey does not stop at the ‘Stans. It just takes a different turn: aiming to teach English in South Korea or Japan. We had no desire to stop travelling after a few months, yet were well aware that our miserable budget would barely cover the first few countries, let alone the two ‘Stans. So we needed a source of income. We are currently in the process of applying to various agencies and will update you on any progress.

Update: We decided that with the slight difficulty and expense of crossing into Tajikistan from Kyrgyzstan by land, we would use our remaining budget on going to India instead. India is a vibrant country that provides a sensory overload; hectic noises, amazing spices, vibrant colours and unique smells. The various religious temples and festivals make India an unforgettable experience. What’s more, it’s cheap! We’ll be in India for a month, starting in Delhi and working our way to the South, so look out for posts!
